Peace in the Middle East

I believe in peace and coexistence in the Middle East. Both exist on local, personal scales.
But neither exist when those in authority huff and puff their way to staying in power.

I see two sides to the conflict. Both are comprised of Israelis & Palestinian; Jews, Muslims,
Christians, Druze & others. The two sides, as I see it, are:

bulletThose who are willing to negotiate a settlement for the end of the conflict through
painful concessions to the other side. These people understand that they must give up
things they (and even their ancestors) have yearned for, if they want to achieve the
ultimate goal of a "normal life" in a peaceful region.
bulletThose who will never negotiate in good faith for a settlement for the end of the
conflict because of any of the following reasons:
bulletThey don't trust the other side
bulletTheir religious convictions won't permit such concessions
bulletThey feel their communal history justifies keeping all they can conquer
bulletThey've paid a heavy personal price that makes it hard for them to compromise

I contend that we must urgently & immediately force our leaders (Israeli & Palestinian) to sit
and commence with negotiations in the spirit of the Geneva Initiative. The Geneva Initiative
Agreements can serve as a model for what can be accomplished by serious & responsible

leaders who put an end to the conflict at the top of our national priorities.

I know there are good Israelis & good Palestinians. I know that the extremists of both peoples
would have us live in conflict until the other side capitulates. I know the horrific consequences
of that continued conflict to both peoples, the entire Middle East & the world. I knew some
who have been killed. I know their families & the wounds that remain after the dead are buried.
Almost everyone in the region knows someone who has perished, sometimes in the most horrific
ways.

I am also not naive to believe that all acts of violence will end with the signing of an eventual
agreement. I realize they won't. But that must not stop us from making all attempts to end both
the conflict and the violence. The extremists will be forced to be more extreme, as they will
be total outcasts, especially from within their own communities. The average individuals will
embrace normalcy and a good life. Prosperity will follow and true peace will arrive only after
decades that might be needed to come to terms with our horrendous past.
